Sustainable development, the base in The Fabulous Gang
The need to address the environmental emergency is becoming increasingly urgent: Fashion contributes greatly to climate change and despite some cases of sustainable fashion ventures, the vast majority of the textile industry continues to pollute the planet, being responsible for the 10% of global C02 emissions.
According to the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the fashion industry is the second most polluting of the world. In fact, it is estimated that the 20% of industrial water pollution is associated with the production of clothing, and this sector is responsible for the emission of 850 million tons of C02 a year and the dumping of half a million tons of microfiber into the sea, which is equivalent to 3 million barrels of oil, according to data also from the UN.
For this reason, sustainable fashion is gaining more and more prominence, in a world where the global reality looks towards sustainable development as the only possible way to fight against climate change.
Carried out by the former Norwegian Prime Minister, it was in the Brundtland Report that the term was first used sustainable development, defined as one that meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations. Sustainable development has two clear objectives: preserving the environment and reducing consumption levels.
Many of the challenges that human beings face, such as climate change, water scarcity, inequalities or hunger, can only be resolved from a global perspective and by promoting sustainable development: a commitment to social progress, environmental balance and economic growth.
This sustainability has acquired such importance in the current reality that it has become the target of all political actions and programs, as is the case of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals as the basis for any action by part of governments from all over the world.
Sustainable development is based on three pillars:
- Economic sustainability, which aims to reduce extreme poverty and ensure fair paid employment for all;
- Environmental sustainability, which aims to protect the natural balance of the planet, while limiting the impact of human activities on the planet;
- Social sustainability, which guarantees access to basic resources and services for all.
